Aftercare
Tattoos usually take 10-21 days to heal fully. During the first few days they will be red, swollen, and sore. Then they should tighten and dry out, forming a thin and flakey scab. No matter how tempting, never pick the scabs or flakey skin off your tattoo!
The first 7 days are a crucial time when it comes to healing your tattoo
Your artist will have applied a “second skin” dressing to your tattoo. Ideally this should stay on for 4-5 days.
In the first 24 hours there may be a build up of plasma under the wrap, this is completely normal. If this occurs, make a small hole and push the liquid out onto a clean paper towel.
After 4-5 days, when it is time to remove the dressing, unwrap the tattoo with clean hands. Use warm water to remove all the gunk on the surface of the tattoo - this is just plasma and excess ink. Pat dry with clean kitchen paper towel and allow to air dry for a few minutes. Apply a thin layer of after care balm, for example hustle butter (for the first week of healing; after which cocoa butter could be used).
If you are using soap to wash a healing tattoo, use non-scented soaps.
Always clean your hands before touching your fresh tattoo
Only unwrap your tattoo if you can clean it immediately
Never use alcohol based products on fresh tattoos
Never re-wrap a tattoo unless you have cleaned it
Do not re-wrap too tightly as it needs air circulating to breathe
Never allow fresh tattoos to come in contact with pet hair, saliva, bathroom towels, tight clothing, or anything that could harbour bacteria
Never swim or go into a hot-tub/sauna with a fresh or healing tattoo. Keep the fresh or healing tattoo out of the sun.
